I just created a page on Facebook called For Teens With Selective Mutism (SM) and it's for teens ages 13-19 and their families, but if you have younger children, its ok. There you can socialize with others and get advice from me and any questions you have I'll answer too! Join today!
I had SM but luckily I have finally fully grown out of it, I know exactly how you lot feel and its horrible but trust me it is possible to overcome Sm. :P
@alistilla2 Don't talk like that as if you know what people with this disorder are going through. We're not faking, we're not pretending we can't talk. We just CAN'T in certain situations. It totally controls our lives, it's hell. Wanting to speak, screaming the words in your head, but having nothing come out is a terrible feeling. Thanks for being ignorant, asshole.
I used to have this condition, but I don't think I have it anymore. I still don't talk at school, not because I'm extremely nervous, I just don't want to see peoples reactions.
I recently found out that a kid has selective mutism at school. Man, it's really bad. The most he'll do is laugh, won't even say a word to anyone, not even to the teachers. I feel sorry for him. He's a jerk, though. He threw a bug at my face :(
In some ways I feel 4 the families, children or anyone who would have to go through this problem. But I can't help but wonder If this is not an act of genius! Not having to deal with stupid people! Waste their time to interact with whom they choose but of course if its some kind of anxiety they may not be able to control it. But according to what this video states thay dont really know the cause except that it is genetic, in family history, Thats what I should do when dealing with retards
Thank you so much for posting this video. There's a girl I used to know who had this and no one seemed to be able to explain it in a way that made sense and that I could understand. This clip has helped me to have a much greater understanding of it, and, hopefully, it's educated many on this. Thanks! :)
I had this as a child, mostly in school. When I was called on in class, all I could do was whisper. It was weird, and noone knew what my problem was!! Teachers would talk to my Mom, and she'd tell them that they can't get me to shut up at home!! lmao I was loud and outspoken at home. Sooo weird, I do wonder what causes it.
oh wow!! there was a girl in my 3rd grade class who wouldnt speak and the teachers wernt mean but there were like, come on you have to speak sometime or another. but she would speak at home! now i feel so bad for her!!!
Now I can say that I've almost fully overcame this by addressing it in healthy ways using consistent exercise and meditation, which lowers the anxiety and increased my confidence and allows me to socialize with people at ease. The video is correct, the key is to do it in small steps and work your way up, however you need to keep the momentum going because it is easy to relapse. If your child has this, get him or her help now.
I had this as a kid, and looking at how that girl behaves reminds me exactly how I was at 7. I'm 24 now, and I pretty much had this until I was 18 where I started working and finally socializing with people. Since then I'd have months of constant daily interaction without any fear and then I'd relapse and I'd have months of social isolation. During my early twenties I coped with the extreme anxiety in harmful ways, which hampered my progress with work and school.
